Octopus (TM) Holdings Limited, formed in 2005 and owned by the major transport operator in Hong Kong, MTR Corporation (MTRC), encompasses Octopus Cards Limited, Octopus Knowledge Limited, Octopus Rewards Limited, Octopus Investments Limited, and Octopus Connect Limited. The Octopus Cards unit, established as the Creative Star Limited joint venture in 1994, operates the Octopus contactless smartcard payment system. The platform was launched in 1997. Creative Star was renamed Octopus Cards Limited in 2002. The Octopus system allows cardholders to complete financial transactions, authenticate their identities, and access buildings across Hong Kong. Approximately 1,000 service providers employ the Octopus system. Octopus Knowledge Limited, which includes Octopus Netherlands Limited and Octopus Cards (NL) B.V., offers clients international automatic fare collection consulting services. The unit's Octopus Netherlands business provides clients across the Netherlands with smart card system deployment consulting services. Octopus Holdings' Octopus Rewards unit develops and operates the Octopus Rewards program. It works with a variety of merchants. Octopus Connect offers clients customer relationship management (CRM) and consumer research services.
