The firm encompasses over 80 subsidiaries. Its music units produce pianos, portable keyboards, wind instruments, string instruments, percussion instruments, and synthesizers. The company also is known for its Avitecs acoustics and soundproofing business. Yamaha has developed home theater, desktop audio, network router, and other products. The firm originally produced reed organs and pianos. It began manufacturing motorcycles in 1955 and electronic organs in 1959. The company launched its alloy development operations in 1961. Yamaha established the Yamaha Music Foundation in 1966.
