Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), based in Richland, Washington, is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) unit that is managed by the DOE's Office of Science. The laboratory also performs research for other DOE offices, government agencies, universities, and businesses. The organization employs applied research in information analysis, online security, and weapons non-proliferation in preventing and countering terrorism. The laboratory also conducts research on hydrogen and biomass fuels. Since its founding, the organization has earned over 1,500 U.S. and foreign patents. PNNL maintains a marine research facility in Dequim, Washington. The laboratory also has offices in Oregon and Washington. PNNL includes the William R. Wiley Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), Applied Process Engineering Laboratory (APEL), Radiochemical Process Laboratory, and New Bioproducts, Sciences, and Engineering Laboratory (BSEL) units. Battelle has operated PNNL since 1965. Laboratory staff have won Lawrence, Coblentz, Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and 'Discover Magazine' awards.
