UIQ Technology AB, based in Ronneby, Sweden, is a Sony Ericsson and Motorola company that develops open platform mobile telephone software. A customizable interface and development tools support the Symbian OS smartphone platform. The company's system allows users to design a variety of interfaces for a multiple consumer markets. A single codeline is employed in designing interfaces, reducing development costs. UIQ Technology software has been installed on Sony Ericsson, Motorola, BenQ, and Arima mobile telephones. Programs allow end users to access web browsing, e-mail, instant messaging, personal information management, media playback, gaming, remote synchronization, and other features. Systems can be customized with UIQ Technology and third-party application and content downloads. The My UIQ website allows consumers to find and download programs and content. UIQ Technology was established in 1998 as Ericsson Mobile Communications' Mobile Applications Lab. The company was acquired by Symbian Limited in 1999. It developed the Quartz pen-based communications system in the same year. In 2002, the firm was rebranded as UIQ Technology AB, and the Quartz software was renamed UIQ. Sony Ericsson acquired the firm in 2006. Motorola acquired a stake in the firm in 2007.
