Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), established in 1949 and based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)Defense Program laboratory that manages nuclear weapon and national security research projects. The organization arms, tests, and delivers weaponry to the U.S. military. It encompasses chemical and biological countermeasure, combustion research, distributed information system, and physical and engineering sciences units. SNL manages microfluidics, laser optical sensing, combustion chemistry, computational modeling and simulation, nanotechnology, and other projects. The organization handles flight test instrumentation, supporting stockpile surveillance operations. The government-owned laboratory is operated by Lockheed Martin for the DOE's National Nuclear Security Administration.
