The Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS), founded in 1993 as SGML Open, is a consortium of vendors and consumers that promotes the development and adoption of open technology standards. The organization has developed Web services, security, e-commerce, supply chain, and other standards that streamline the global exchange of data and information. It is known for the ebXML (ISO 15000), Universal Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI), Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML), OpenDocument (ISO 26300), eGovernment, and Open CSA standards. OASIS operates the Cover Pages and XML.org information portals. It distributes the 'OASIS News' and 'XML Daily Newslink' newsletters. The consortium serves 5,000 members across 100 countries. Members define the group's technical agenda. Work is ratified by open ballot. Officers are elected by members and serve two-year terms. OASIS, as SGML Open, originally focused on products that supported Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). The group adopted its current name in 1998, when it began promoting eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and additional open standards.
