Varioptic SA, founded in 2002 and based in Lyon, France, develops electrically controlled optical liquid lenses. The firm's Electrowetting Technology is employed in its auto-focus lenses and zoom products. The portable products have no moving parts, consume limited amounts of power, and can be integrated into mobile devices. The lenses also can be integrated into endoscopy, ophthalmology, biometric identification, and automotive systems. Varioptic investors include ANVAR, Crealys, UJF, Region Rhone-Alpes, Rhone-Alpes Entreprendre, and the French Research Ministry. The firm was founded by Bruno Berge, formerly of the National Center for Scientific Research and Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon. In 2004, Berge won the Engineer of the Year Award from 'Industrie et Technologies,' 'L'Usine Nouvelle,' and the Conseil national des ingenieurs et scientifiques de France (CNISF).
